What growth did you experience as a future teacher this week?

Majority of my growth came from learning about assessments and the process that goes into them. It was interesting to see all of the research that goes into writing a good assessment and how some questions have been proving not to provide accurate results like the all of the above questions. Some of the slide I found interesting was the test review ones, because I found a lot of my teachers teaching to their test even in college classes. I find this process over time has students rely on the study sessions instead of trying to apply the information they learning from the class. There is a balance between giving students topics that might be on the test to having them see the questions of the test.

What challenges are you facing in your growth as a future teacher?

Some of the challenges I am facing is trying to balance everything and find the time to write lessons and questions. I’m sure as teacher this will become slightly easier because teacher will be my job and I won’t have to worry about so many other variables. Also, trying to apply all of the knowledge I am learning, but still not working with students has been kind of difficult. When writing lesson plans it is difficult to know the content that students are learning in the grade and how an actual student might react to a lesson plan we have written.

What areas of growth are you experiencing in regards to assessment?

Some growth I have seen in my wording of standards and questions. I am starting to think more about clear language and how to be concise while not generalizing. How the assessment we choose can have great impacts on students. Also, not every assessment is created equally and there are flaws to all assessments.

How does your understanding of what you have learned impact your work as an educator?

As an educator I really need to think about my biases and how my assessments could be flawed in different ways. Also, to really think about what I’m assessing and if the assessment I’m could actually be measuring something different. When reading the discussion post I noticed a lot of people had troubles in math partly due to specialized content wording (liked sewing, farming, and playing cards) something not all students might not have knowledge in. Problems should be focused on the content students learned, not outside knowledge. This made me realize how important wording is and not to assume all students have the background information.

1    How did you grow as a teacher this module?

I feel like most of my growth came from learning more about how to do lesson plans. From the start of the quarter I didn’t have much experience and felt totally unsure about the first one I submitted using the template. However, with each lesson I feel more comfortable and confident in my abilities. Also, it has been nice to apply the knowledge from all of our classes into the lessons we create. My knowledge with standards has grown and I understand how they are constructed and the importance of a measurable assessment. Another key element is to use descriptive verbs to describe what the students are doing in the learning objective.

2.      What goals do you have around lesson planning that you want to focus on as you move through the program?

When writing most of my plans for this quarter I feel like I have been focusing on reading, writing, and social studies, but I haven’t gotten much practice in creating math lesson plans. Some of my other goals for the quarter is to learn more instructional strategies to use during instruction. This will help me create variety in my lessons. Also, it would be nice to learn strategies for ELL students, accommodations, modifications, and differentiate instruction. Sometimes these sections can be hard to fill out, but it is also because we are not in a class and its all hypothetical situations
